Digital Painting & New Media
Micah A. Cuva
I'm Micah A. Cuva, a freelance artist from Monterey, California, where the rugged coastline and maritime history heavily influence my work. My art spans photography, digital creations, traditional painting, and charcoal sketches. Additionally, I have a keen interest in classical art and techniques, which further enriches my artistic endeavors and allows me to blend traditional and modern styles in my work. While studying Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology at UC Santa Cruz, I developed a deep respect for the natural world’s beauty and interconnectedness, inspired by figures like John Steinbeck and Alexander von Humboldt. My art captures the essence of coastal life, reflecting the delicate balance of ecosystems and the resilience of coastal communities. Whether depicting the lively Fisherman's Wharf or the serene Santa Cruz vistas, my work showcases Monterey's timeless allure. Outside of art, I’m an avid explorer and nature lover, often finding inspiration in Big Sur's wilderness or the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, which drives my creativity and helps me discover new perspectives in nature.
The Burning Heart of David
Summer 2024
Digital Painting
This piece is a philosophical exploration of the intersection between classical ideals and the emotional depths of human experience. By juxtaposing Michelangelo's David—a symbol of virtue, strength, and the noble spirit—with the imagery of a burning heart inspired by Dante's La Vita Nuova Sonnet I, this digital painting delves into the profound duality of human nature.
David, sculpted in the tradition of Greek art, embodies the ideal of the virtuous man, a paragon of physical and moral excellence. However, the cracks in his face reveal an underlying vulnerability, exposing the fiery heart within. This heart, burning with passion and pain, evokes Dante's portrayal of love as both a divine gift and a source of profound suffering.
The fissures in David's face symbolize the inevitable fractures that occur when the ideals of strength and virtue confront the raw, unfiltered emotions of love and heartbreak. The shifting hues visible through these cracks underscore the fluidity and impermanence of human emotions, suggesting that beneath even the most stoic exterior lies a dynamic and ever-changing inner life.
These concepts are not mutually exclusive; strength and turmoil, love and grief, exist together. To grieve is to have loved, and to have strength is to have endured suffering.
